Singer/songwriter and 6-time Grammy nominee Brandy Clark released her highly anticipated new album Your Life is A Record on March 6th via Warner Records. The 9 track album displays a fine tone of distinctive storytelling, narrated by Clark and melodically navigated by producer Jay Joyce, with Lester Snell bringing his honey-soaked arrangement to the mix.
“If your life is a record, the people and the places are the songs” Clark sings in the album opener “I’ll Be The Sad Song.” Coupled with her lulling voice, Giles Reaves brings his soothing sounds on drums and percussion and Jedd Hughes charms on both electric/acoustic guitar and dobro.
“Long Walk” is a fingerpicking tune, and “Love is Fire” delivers soulful play of a love’s burning desire, “Cause love is a fire, out of control, a desperate desire, the higher it goes.” Clark sings, backed up by Brent Anderson: “Once it sparks that devil’s dance in your heart and soul you know it can’t be contained. ‘When one life ends another begins’ is the story with “Pawn Shop,” a co-write with Troy Verges.
Often in life, we don’t realise what’s most important until it’s gone. “Who You Thought I Was” and “Apologies” annotate the message of missing that someone special with a desire to change, and desperately wanting them back.
The highlight of the album is Clark’s duet with one of America’s most golden composer heroes, Randy Newman, in “Bigger Boat.” This song contemplates the emphasis on consumption and the role that media plays in everyday life as it injects new methods and styles of how to live right, oblivious to the fear it ultimately instills in people.
The album concludes with a call to let bygones be bygones, and let the past go while life moves on. “Can We Be Strangers” hums a throwback to the sounds of early R&B tunes as “The Past is The Past” finds Jedd Hughes shining yet again in his divine power.
