Chris Young
Hammersmith Eventim Apollo
Charlotte Lehmann – 9 th May 2019
As part of the final leg of his incredible Losing Sleep World Tour, Chris Young came back to London and performed at Hammersmith’s Eventim Apollo on the 9 th May 2019.
This stretch of the tour included the wonderful Lindsay Ell as support and she kicked off the evening with a bang. Effortlessly matching a country sound with an electric guitar, Lindsay wowed the audience with tracks including Castle and Criminal from her debut album The Project. She also performed a crowd-pleasing cover of Stevie Wonder’s Signed Sealed Delivered, with her gritty vocals and natural guitar skills warming up the crowd perfectly for
Chris Young.
Soon the first bars of Hanging On played through the speakers and the crowd tore the roof off the Apollo as they cheered and welcomed Chris back to the UK country family with open arms. As he continued with Getting You Home, followed by fan favourites Lonely Eyes and Losing Sleep, Chris looked stunned by the reception he got from the crowd as they sang along at full capacity throughout every song. After each song came to an end they cheered
and showed him so much love that he simply stood and smiled at the crowd, thanking them for everything they do to make these moments possible.
Young made sure to sprinkle hit tracks from other albums, such as Think of You and I’m Coming Over, amongst the tracks from the Losing Sleep album. Every song got an overwhelming reaction from the crowd, causing an incredible atmosphere to build within the venue. This grew even more as he played his most recent single Raised on Country, making everyone feel like breaking out their cowboy hats and boots to dance along to the country track.
As the show slowly neared the end, Chris performed unforgettable covers of Keith Whitley’s Don’t Close Your Eyes and Garth Brooks’ Papa Loved Mama for his parents, who were visiting London for the first time to experience his Hammersmith show.
Chris was determined to squeeze every minute he could out of the show, right up until the venue’s 11pm curfew. As the room was filled with adoring fans, who knew every word to each of his songs, it was clear to see why. Chris’ deep, smooth and soulful vocals mixed with a country twang made for an amazing evening of music and it was obvious that the country artist and country fans alike were enjoying every moment.
Young is very loved by the country community and deserves every success he has. He put everything into his performance, owning the stage from the minute he stepped on it, and the crowd gave everything they had in return. Chris needed nothing accept his voice and charming personality to wow and connect with every person in the room and he left everyone begging for him to return to London very soon.
