- Favorite thing to do on a day off?
Forever and always, my favorite thing to do especially in cities I’m less familiar with- find an antique store. I love to get lost in the aisles and see what ancient treasures await.
- Favorite (or first) concert you have ever attended?
One of the best shows I ever saw was Wanda Jackson in 2007 at The Key Club in Hollywood. She was in her early 70s already, but tore the house down. Her band sounded great and we were all dancing our asses off.
- What was the “a-ha” moment when you knew the song was completed and perfect?
When we created the chorus melody on “High In The Valley” it was a “HOLY SHIT THIS IS GOOD” moment (written with my collaborators Jasmine Ash, Joseph Holiday, and Kenny Fleetwood.) I’d had the idea for the song’s concept, the title and the opening line for a while, so when it all came alive that day writing with those guys, I was elated. I felt so strongly about all the elements and it was SO satisfying to write and record.

- Who would you love to collaborate with? JD McPherson. The first time I heard,"North Side Gal," it kinda blew my mind. I love his voice and his style. - Where do you draw inspiration from when writing? I'm incredibly visual, so oftentimes, I'm kind of picturing a movie of sorts in my mind, and writing to get those visuals to paper, in words. Does that even make sense? haha. - Is there a professional “bucket list” item you would love to check off? I would LOVE to play the Hollywood Bowl. Growing up near LA, it's been a staple in my life. I know it'll happen one of these days. |
- Do you write about personal experience, the experience of others, observations, made-up stories, something else, or a combination?
Definitely on polar ends of the spectrum, a combo: I write both things that are incredibly personal and true to my life, AND I write completely fabricated tales. I've been very lucky in love and so if I can't personally relate to a heartbreak, I will make something up entirely. But then, 3 of the songs on this EP, "High In The Valley," "Outsider" and "Things Take Time," are all very personal about my journey as a human and the pursuit of my dreams. - Recent release you cannot stop listening to? Recent-ish: I think The Highwomen record is absolutely BRILLIANT. Not only is it stunningly produced, but also the songs are just perfection. You can listen top to bottom without a skip. Several songs on there are like, "I wish I would have written that" songs. |

Born into a musical legacy — Dominique Pruitt is no stranger to music. Her father Larry Brown once played in The Association and Smothers Brothers before joining Engelbert Humperdinck in the ‘80s, and mother Anne-Marie Brown sang with The Babys and Jon Waite. Now Pruitt is charting a path of her own with her new EP Praying for Rain (07/02).
From the deep desert vibes of the title track, to the Nancy Sinatra nods in standout “High in the Valley,” to the tear-in-her-beer, tropical-tinged “Even My Roses Are Blue” (written with her father), Pruitt pays homage to the sounds of her youth while paving her own singular and refreshing trail forward.
The upcoming EP was produced and co-written by Joseph Holiday, Praying for Rain trills the universal story of the struggle to follow a dream, set to a stylistic medley of spaghetti western, rockabilly, classic country, and surf rock (with a murder ballad for good measure).
