Marcus King- El Dorado review

Singer-songwriter Marcus King is set to release his first solo album El Dorado 17th January via Snakefarm Records /Concord in the UK.

The young guitar powerhouse has been around from a young age playing shows across the US. Opening up, headlining shows and appearing on festivals that included Eric Clapton’s very own Crossroad Blues festival.

Now 23 and living in Nashville, King joined forces with former The Black Keys musician and producer Dan Auerbach for a 12 track cross-blend album delving into blues, soul, funk and country folk.

Opening up with “Young Man’s Dream” the Neil Young inspired tune is an intimate country-folk mix filled with rich songwriting and stirring guitar playing. In an expressive contemporary blues manner with “The Wall.” as “Wildflowers & Wine” a soulful slow-burning tune to “One Day She’s Here” a confessional, personal song that gives a throwback to the 1970s funk/soul era a spin, “my experience of inconsistent female presences in my life. It’s about wanting to keep hold of them while you watch them slip away.” “Beautiful Stranger” shines a light yet again on King’s alluring storytelling as “Too Much Whiskey” slides into country-funk with a little dip into some Bo Diddly blues. Discovering self, “Love Song” dives into King’s delicate soul. Ending the El Dorado journey with a slow-moving “No Pain.”

The meaning of El Dorado goes way back as the city of gold and sure enough, King’s new album is pure gold with a wholesome richness. Making one believe that King is a reincarnation of Willie Mitchell’s HI Records, Al Bell’s STAX interwind with Own Bradley and Billy Sherrill Nashville Sound memorable tunes.
