Award winning Canadian country band Nice Horse recently released their new track Hot Mess. To find out more about the Alberta quartet, we caught up with Ka'e and Brandi
CITUK: As writers, does it get any easier revisiting crucial moments in life and singing about it in front of an audience? Ka'e: I don’t really know if it gets easier, it’s more about what ever strikes a chord at the right 'me. Brandi: As writers, I think you have to already have an innate ability to live in those moments. Reliving them doesn’t feel difficult, because, deep down inside, we all like it. I know that, for me, I almost get a high off of those memories, those feelings. Can you be a feelings addict? If so, I might be that!
CITUK: With a couple of EPs and singles under your belt and collaborations , what has recording music taught you so far? Ka'e: We’ve been musicians for a very long time, all with various projects prior to this project, that have been recording/touring/promoting for a very long. There’s always something to learn when it comes to recording, based on who your producer is. Each has their own way and style of getting the best out of a musician, and hardly any of them do it the same.
CITUK: One artist the band would want to collaborate with? Brandi: One of the things I am most grateful for in this band, is that we have had the opportunity to collaborate with so many people, that as a li le girl, I could have only dreamed about. I never thought that, in my music career, I would get to have my songs produced by Bob Rock, write songs with Carolyn Dawn Johnson, or perform as the backing band for Trixie Mattel. All of those collaborations were dream collaborations for me. However, I would say that, if I could choose another dream collaborations, it would be to write and perform a song with P!nk! Ka'e: Dolly Parton!
CITUK: Your Top 5 country records? Ka'e: This is a hard one! Patsy Cline - sentimentally Yours, anything Dolly Parton, Kasey Musgraves - Golden Hour... Brandi: My top 5 truly exposes me as the 90’s country girl that I am: Shania Twain by Shania Twain, For my Broken Heart by Reba McEntire, Room with a View by Carolyn Dawn Johnson, No Fences by Garth Brooks, and (my one modern pick for my Top 5) Weight of These Wings by Miranda Lambert.
CITUK: What inspires you to keep going? Ka'e: This band is a lot of fun, so just knowing I’m going to keep spending 'me with these amazing women is enough to make me want to keep doing it! Brandi: I’m not sure any of us in this band see music as a choice—it is built into the core of each of us. I am not sure we could stop if we tried, and why would we want to? I get to create music with my best friends every single day I wake up...and I wouldn’t have it any other way : )
