Robbie Cavanagh- What is Americana?
Anderson East said Americana is an orphanage for artists who don’t know where else to go and I definitely feel like one of those orphans.
Americana gives me home without boundaries. It gives me the freedom to create the music I want to make, without having to stick to the rules. I am able to explore outside of my comfort zone, and in fact, I’m encouraged to, and the theme that holds it together is that it’s absolutely timeless.
I grew up listening to artists that I couldn’t place in a genre. Elton John, James Taylor, REM, Counting Crows, Crowded House. They all had elements of country, rock, blues, folk but they didn’t seem to fall in a category. It’s only in recent years that I’ve realised that I’ve always listened to Americana and maybe always belonged there, and after digging out some of my old clothes, I’ve definitely been here before!
Americana doesn’t follow trends. When other styles fall in and out of fashion, it’s a constant that stands strong and presents real, honest music that will stand the test of time. But music aside, Americana is a community of artists that shows no prejudice or hate. It simply cares. That’s why it’s so special and that’s why it will always be around.
