Ryan Bingham @ Union Chapel, London
Charlotte Lehmann – 26th April 2019
Ryan Bingham continued his tour for his new album ‘American Love Song’ on the 26th April 2019, in the unique and breath-taking venue Union Chapel, for a sold-out show.
The show was kicked off by the talented Soham De. Soham lit up the venue with his smooth vocals and charming nature as he performed tracks from his EP ‘The Next Nowhere’ and his newest single ‘Deer’. After Soham De’s sparkling performance, the crowd eagerly awaited the man of the evening, Ryan Bingham.
Clad in a cowboy hat and flares, Ryan Bingham took his place beneath the stain glass windows on the Union Chapel stage. The crowd greeted him with adoration and cheered as the music began. Throughout the performance, Bingham gave the crowd a narrative of his life through stories and music from his new album. Giving a short story before playing his songs, Ryan took the audience through a rollercoaster of emotions. He had them laughing at his tales of hitchhiking back from Run-D.M.C.’s gig with a truck driver named Al, before playing his song ‘Long Way From Georgia’ which was written in tribute to Al. Following this he tugged at the crowd’s heartstrings with ‘Wolves’, written for students and young people affected by gun violence. The emotion from Wolves’ was felt in every corner of the venue and Ryan explained this honest and heartfelt performance was due to his own feelings caused by his experiences when he was younger. Alongside this, Ryan’s skilful guitar picking and husky vocals made this song soar within the church venue.
Throughout his performance, Bingham sprinkled a few of his previous tracks amongst the new, including ‘Tell My Mother I Miss Her So’ and ‘Hard Times’. He also delighted the crowd by effortlessly playing the first tune that he learnt on guitar, a mariachi tune called ‘La Malaguena’. As much as the fans adore his older material, the reaction received by the tracks from ‘American Love Song’ was overwhelming. The clapping from the crowd throughout ‘God Damn Blues’ echoed around the church and ‘Jingle and Go’ had everyone in the room tapping and cheering along. These cheers were only matched when Bingham took to the stage for his encore and dazzled as he closed the amazing show.
Bingham captivated the attention of every person in the room and this was proven by the love and support they showed after every song. From his personal stories through to his passionate musical performance, Ryan was incredible. Here is a man who was born to perform and comes alive when he steps onstage. Putting 100% into every note Ryan Bingham lifted the roof off Union Chapel and gave everyone a night of great music they will not forget.
