The Highways Sit Down with Tigirlily Gold
As firm fan favourites at C2C: Country to Country during both of their previous visits to the UK, North Dakota sister Tigirlily Gold have brought their infectious Country & Midwestern vibes back across the pond for a run of shows with Carly Pearce. In addition to opening up the INSIDE THE DREAM TOUR, Kendra and Krista are also set to perform at the Royal Albert Hall during this year’s Highways Festival. There is a lot of new music on the way and the girls have such great energy, so we couldn’t turn down the opportunity to catchup with them before the show in Manchester.
Well, here we are with time number three of catching up with you both.
“Yeah, we’ve been through so much together ha-ha.” (Krista)
Well, there's obviously been one very big change for one of you since we last chatted, like in terms of life stuff and I think you having your hair slightly longer looks amazing and it really suits you.
“Thank you. Yes. I have my hair a little longer, so I can flip it a little bit more on stage now.” (Kendra)
Then there’s that tiny little matter of your sister getting engaged, so congratulations.
“Thank you.” (Krista)
You thought that’s what I was setting up for first, didn’t you?
“Ha-ha, well I never like to assume.” (Krista)
“Well, it’s because the real big news is definitely my hair getting longer.” (Kendra)
Exactly and that’s the family news that more people should be celebrating although Krista, I would that it would probably mean your surname will be a lot easier for people to pronounce but after watching the video you and Walker made, I would say Montgomery the way you would.
“Yeah, thank you, so the Brits agree with me.” (Krista)
Yes, as Brits, we agree with you on everything with one exception.
“Oh, what's that?” (Krista)
The way that you say the top of a house.
“Ha-ha a roof (pronounced ruff)” (Kendra)
Ruff is the noise that a puppy makes when it barks.
“Ha-ha, yeah, ruff ruff. You're not wrong. I don't know where that came from, but that's just how we grew up saying that so it’s ruff and I don’t know why we were taught that.” (Kendra)
“But you know what? I will say, because a lot of people have been disagreeing with me, so I'm glad and I’m happy with ninety percent from you guys.” (Krista)
I wasn’t sure if it was just a you thing or if it was a more general North Dakota way.
“I think it's more North Dakota than Midwestern, we’re realising some of our things we say and do are more Northern Midwest versus just overall Midwest, you know what I mean? We're almost Canadian at that point.” (Kendra)
Canadians tend to make less of a mess of our language and if your closer to them and I think you say most things right, that might help explain why but let’s get back in the game, so how was Bristol last night?
“It was awesome, it was our first time playing in Bristol and got to hop on stage with Carly for a song. They were so warm and it was it was awesome, then this is our first time actually ever playing in Manchester too so, we're very excited. We've had a lot of DMs and messages through our Instagram saying people are coming out early to see us, which is really very amazing because it still blows our minds that we have fans across the world that listen to our music and the people over here love some “Shoot Tequila”. They love some tequila and it just makes our hearts very happy, so it's good to be back over here. The fans over here are, I mean, you guys know that they're the best ever and we are just so appreciative of them, plus it's been two years since we've been here, so we've been itching to get back. For Carly to have us on her tour and to be doing Highways on Saturday is just unreal.” (Kendra)
“It’s perfect timing, perfect tour, perfect cities and I mean, what more can you ask for?” (Krista)
It must be quite nice to have a bit more time over here as well, like C2C is chaos as you both know so well, where even where you went to Glasgow as well, that’s what you’re here to do so when people ask hey, how was London? You’re like, I don’t know, I saw the inside of a tour bus and backstage at a couple of venues. I know you probably didn’t see a huge amount of Bristol or Manchester but at least you’re not in a rush.
“We went for coffee in Bristol, we had lunch, dinner and we walked around, saw all the boats and everything, it was just beautiful and there was a bunch of these shipping containers made into restaurants and things, so we went there for lunch and we love to explore the cities we're in if we have time as much as we can, just because the coolest part of our job is that it does take us all over the world, so we love experiencing new things for the first time. Here today, we didn't get as much time in Manchester but we do have a day off in London, so we're going to try to do some touristy things there.” (Kendra)
“We try to do good about it and we try to take advantage of it.” (Krista)
What are the things on the list then for tomorrow, what do you really want to do?
“Well, we're big foodies, we love food, so obviously we're going to get some Indian food in London.” (Kendra)
Okay, standard tourist from Nashville tick box there.
“Yeah, standard and we’ve done a little bit.” (Krista)
“Yeah, we've done the Tower of London and Big Ben.” (Kendra)
“We haven’t done the Borough market yet but we’ve seen Buckingham Palace, so we’ve done a lot of London actually, well the big ones.” (Krista)
“We did the Uber boat too ha-ha.” (Kendra)
That's actually a good way to see things.
“We haven’t done the London Eye so that would be cool if we have time for that but now that we’ve done the main touristy things in London, it would be cool to maybe do some more local stuff.” (Krista)
We've spent some time in Soho but we're trying to find a good pub, bar or place to go after our Royal Albert Hall show. (Kendra)

We've spent some time in Soho but we're trying to find a good pub, bar or place to go after our Royal Albert Hall show. (Kendra)
Kensington is a really nice part of town with a lot of really nice pubs. There’s one that the outside is completely covered in flowers, I can’t think what it’s called off the top of my head but if you speak to Carly’s monitor engineer, Leland, he knows the spot. I’m pals with a lot of the guys that tour or used to tour with Brett Young so that’s how we know each other and he’ll know the place, it’s one of the prettiest pubs you’ll find but it’s a very nice part of town and where all of the museums are and obviously there is a pretty special venue where you are going to be playing. To us, it’s truly not just the most iconic venue here but anywhere in the world.
“I mean, we know about it.” (Kendra)
“I get chills when you say that, because I'm so excited to play it.” (Krista)
Does it have the same prestige over there? Like, the way we think about the Royal Albert Hall, is that is like what Red Rocks is or Madison Square Garden is over there in that it's one of those places you're like, that’s on the bucket list to really want to play there.
“I think definitely it's one of those places. You think about the most iconic music venues in the world, obviously, you think of Royal Albert Hall, you think of Madison Square Garden, Red Rocks and the Grand Ole Opry.” (Kendra)
“Some people say this is like the Grand Ole Opry of the UK.” (Krista)
“They just did the Opry there last year, right? Those kind of places, you know how many people have stepped onto that stage and you know it's very sacred so there's just a different energy going into a show like that and you just really want to soak it all in, remember the moments and take a good look into the crowd and take a take a lot of mental pictures.” (Kendra)
“I feel like it also makes you appreciate how far you've come in this career too. You're like, wow, I get to step on this iconic stage, look where music is taking me and it's so awesome.” (Krista)
All the fans say how it's one of the few, if only places where no matter how many times you've been there, when you walk into that auditorium and you look up, you look around, like, you appreciate what's been there before and it's just so stunning to look at. It really is, I can't really put it into words. You know, the first time you walked out into the 02 and you got this huge bowl in front of you, it's like shit, there’s gonna be a lot of people here and RAH is nowhere near as many people but it’s just so magical.
“It’s iconic and it’s just going to be us two and a guitar, it’s going to be very stripped back so it will be a really cool moment to share as sisters and we’ll frame that picture in our houses.” (Kendra)
I guess looking ahead, we've done two C2C trips and you’re here now with Carly, then hopefully be looking to come back again.
“Absolutely, we'd love to come back and eventually do our own headlining tour, which would be amazing.” (Kendra)
“Yeah, bring our band too.” (Krista)
“Of course, to bring our band, because at this point, we’ve only done acoustic shows over here so we need to bring the band and bring that show to the UK.” (Kendra)
How does your live show transform when you've got the boys, or girls on stage with you for a full band show?
“I would say it's a pretty different show. I mean, obviously we bring as much energy as we can when it's just the two of us and we love doing that because you can truly hear all the vocals and the root of what we do, but the thing we love most about music, is performing live and when we have the band, we just have so much fun. It’s very high energy, we played down on Broadway for many years and doing the four hour cover gigs, so through that, we learned how to keep going, entertain a crowd and don't lose any momentum. So that would be different probably to the acoustic show.” (Kendra)

As well as these being acoustic shows, you’ve got a brand new song that just came out so, tell us where “I Do or Die” came from.
“Well, we wanted to write a sweet endearing love song and this is what we came up with ha-ha. You know, the expression like this is do or die but with a little twist of “I Do or Die” where I thought, wow, that'd be a funny twist on that phrase and we should write this very funny and humorous because we grew up on early two thousands music. You know like Brad Paisley and Sugarland where there was so much humour and we love that about two thousands country music. So, this song has this little undertone of like, hey, you better not mess up, but it also does it with a little wink and a little sass.” (Krista)
“It’s if we're doing this, we’re doing this for life and obviously it's with a wink. We're not actually serious about that but it's fun. Like she said, we grew up on Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and all these really strong, sassy, fun women and that's what we also hope to bring to country music and that's what this song does. It has a lot of that girl group of energy, a lot of wit and we want people to laugh when they listen to it, honestly, it’s our hope.” (Kendra)
“We don't even take ourselves seriously, so I don't know if anyone could actually think we were.” (Krista)
Yeah, I think people might have noticed that by now ha-ha
“I also feel like musically for this, this is probably the most country song that we've ever released. It's very live band fiddle heavy and at the end of the song, it goes into a full bluegrass moment, so I just think it's a musical thing that we have not done yet in our band, but it still stays true to us, yet kind of pushes it for us a little bit.” (Krista)
I've seen from the credits of this and some of the others that you have been putting out recently that Krists, you’ve been getting involved in the production side a little bit.
“Yes and thanks for noticing.” (Krista)
Is it something you've always really wanted to do and is it really helping to shape what you're doing in this next era?
“Well, I think it's just something that happened naturally. I always love tracking day where all the studios musicians get in there then obviously Kendra's the lead singer of the band, I love her vocals so much and I know how talented she is so I know what her best vocal takes are.” (Krista)
“She knows how to push me.” (Kendra)
“I took on a vocal production role, that means I'm responsible for how all the vocals turn out, which means choosing all of Kendra's takes, what's her best ones, giving her maybe some ideas and working together on that. Then also laying down all the harmonies, the high, low, all the background parts and working with Kendra to get that done. It's been so fun for me, I'm so nerdy about it and I do take it very seriously. I know I just said I don't take myself seriously but probably the only thing I take seriously is the vocal production in our music. It's been a lot of fun and I think it has shaped the next music.” (Krista)
“She's so smart, she's so good, I don't think people know how good she is at the production aspect of what we do and we have very different talents, which is great because when we come combined, then it works out great, but we're a duo. She knows how to push me and give me ideas in the right ways of I know you can get me more.” (Kendra)
"You know, sometimes she's like, come on, Krista. She'll be in the vocal booth and I'll be at the board, then she'll do this face." (Krista)
"Yeah, then we have a little sisterly tiff and move on." (Kendra)
"You, know we had to bicker a bit to get the album right." (Krista)
You mentioned the new album and before you came over, you put out an Instagram post that wasn't too cryptic about it. In terms of it being done, is it like fully done or done from your standpoint and what you need to do for it?
"Yes, so every vocal take and our part is done. The record's not fully done yet, our producer Pete Good is working on making sure everything's right, going to mixing and sending it back to us, so we're getting mixes to listen to right now to make little changes and then it will go to mastering and then we will be like proper done." (Kendra)
In terms of what's going to be on there, we talked about “I Do or Die” and then we’ve obviously had "Country & Midwestern" come out as well, are they a good flavour of what this whole era is going to sound like overall?
“It's definitely a good start, but it is not what the whole record is." (Kendra)
"I would say that shows the high energy, the funny, humorous two thousands vibe a lot, but they're just the tip of the iceberg." (Krista)
"There's also very serious material on there, like "I Tried A Ring On" so it shows the two sides of who we are and what we do. Then there's the very sisterly energy, the girl group energy, there's going back to our Midwest roots, there's the sass and there's also probably, I think, one of our most vulnerable songs that we've ever written on this album, so I'm excited for when we can share that. I mean, we are in our upper twenties, well I just turned thirty so this is a very real record and we wanted to showcase all of it, so we're really excited. It leans into our early two thousands inspirations as well and a little bit of nineties even, so we're excited for people to hear it." (Kendra)
"It's our own thing, so people are going to love it or they're going to hate it and I hope they love it." (Krista)

Lastly, because I know you've got to get ready to go on stage shortly but I think the thing that a lot of people want to know is when are Barb and Sheila going to reach out to Doug Douglason and have a Hot Country Knights collab?
“Ha-ha. Listen, we're waiting on Doug. Wait, I’m gonna go into Sheila mode.” (Krista)
“So, this Doug Douglason, we just are such big fans of him and we've just been trying to get a hold of him, but he's so famous. I just don't know how will we even reach out about that, you know?” (Krista as Sheila)
“I think we just go to his bar, we just go to his bar every day.” (Kendra as Barb)
“At Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row.” (Krista as Sheila)
Or Jerks Gently as Doug calls him.
“Ha-ha, so I hope that happens very soon, we’re nudging at it. Barb and Sheila unfortunately haven't made it to the UK, but they're hoping to make it for CMA Fest.” (Kendra)
“Their Sketchers didn’t make it.” (Krista)
“Ha-ha, I was already over the fifty pound weight limited.” (Kendra)
Has that gone better than you expected it to do?
“Yeah, I mean, this was an idea I had when we were promoting a song called “Country & Midwestern” because we were like, how fun would it be to just be our alter ego, Midwestern, middle-aged selves? Like, this is who we're going to be and then it's fun because it gives us an outlet to just be fun with each other and there’s comedy and it's promo, but not really promo. It just gives us another outlet to entertain people as we just love entertaining.” (Kendra)
“I want to work more on Sheila than I do myself, I love being Sheila.” (Krista)
“There's like a theme here, Krista.” (Kendra)
“They say, you know, be yourself, write real music and I’m like okay, I'm going to turn into someone else, I'm gonna be Sheila!” (Krista)
Well, hopefully they can make it over with you when you come back. I'm sure they were very disappointed they couldn't have fun tonight.
“I got a pretty mean message from them on Instagram.” (Kendra)
Have you set up like a fake Instagram yet? Is that what you do if you’re annoyed with each other and message from Barb and Sheila?
“We are crazy but I did hear that Barb's name maybe mentioned on the new Tigirlily Gold record.” (Kendra)
“So why is Barb mentioned and not Sheila?” (Krista)
“They're going to have a tiff about that.” (Kendra)
“Okay, so there’s goona be a Barb and Sheila fight scene coming up ha-ha.” (Krista)
Well, while it would be box office stuff, hopefully not but thank you both so much, it’s great to see you and I hope you really enjoy Saturday, it'll be something you'll really enjoy and I hope it will be the most magical night for you both.
The new single “I Do Or Die” from Tigirlily Gold is out now and is available HERE. You can find details for all of the girls remaining European shows with Carly Pearce on their WBESITE or you can be the first to be in the know about any news of forthcoming new releases along with what Krista and Kendra are up to by following them on INSTAGRAM TIKTOK TWITTER & FACEBOOK.
