The Sit Down with Kane Brown

Multi-nominated and internationally acclaimed Kane Brown needs absolutely no introduction as his streams in excess of twelve billion and a mere thirteen number one singles clearly show. The country superstar from the border of Tennessee and Georgia has been no stranger to this side of the Atlantic having been here each of the last three years which included a headline performance at C2C: Country to Country in 2024. Now as we turn into October, Kane is back for four British dates in addition to shows in Ireland, the Netherlands and Germany for the European leg of The High Road Tour which we heard more about when we spoke with Kane yesterday.

Hey Kane, thanks for taking the time to hang, because I know you're in one of my favourite cities in the world, so I really appreciate you taking some time out to speak with us today. Have you been to Cologne before?
“Yes in 2023 but I didn’t explore here then but I did today.”

I saw on your Instagram story that you headed to that beautiful cathedral and went around the chocolate museum so did the whole tourist 101 type thing. It's cool you got to kind of do all that before playing a really cool venue tonight as well.
“Yeah, I'm really excited. I saw a picture online and I love playing the old school places like this. It's like I feel like I'm a new artist again so it's going to be cool.”

You've got a couple of stops on the way before, but you’re coming to Wembley Arena here in London next Friday and you've got a couple of cool friends opening up for you on this tour as well.
“Yeah, Dylan (Schneider) and Dasha.”

That’s going to be that's going to be wild and they'll both definitely get that party started for sure. You've been over here quite a few times now and pretty much since the pandemic, you've sort of made a point of coming at least once a year now, as this is the second time you’ve been to Europe this year.
“Yeah, we came over for F1 in February and then we did a magazine shoot for Principle Magazine.”

The F1 launch at the O2 looked really cool, have you managed to get out to any of the US races in Miami, Austin of Vegas before?
“We are headed to Austin and we are headed to Vegas too.”

Oh, lucky you. Are you a big F1 guy? Are you a fan?
“I just love racing and fast cars, so I’ve thought about when I go to Austin, driving my car out there, maybe they'll let me drive on the track and then, we’ve got some other cool things planned with F1 that are going to come up and I'm really excited about.”

Well, you might find there are even more chances when you get an American team with Cadillac coming in next year too.
“Oh, Cadillac's coming in? That’s gonna be fun.”

The F1 event was on the back of ‘Miles On It’ which has gone on to do wonderful things in terms of the numbers, the stats and what people have told you about how great it’s been doing. That was the second time that you worked with Marshmello, but how did you come about working with him initially? Because when you did ‘One Thing Right’ and you look at the other co-writers on there, that looks like it had more of a Nashville feel with Josh Hoge, Jesse Frasure and Matt McGinn in the first instance.
“That's a good question because I honestly forgot, but I do remember we had been talking before and talking about collaborating, then when we wrote that song I reached out to him, sent it to him and was expecting him to be like it's trash but he came back and liked it. Then I remember with ‘Miles On It’ I had just got off stage and he sent me a text that was like, hey, I’ve got round two. At first I thought the song was trash ha-ha, then I listen to it again for the second time, because my manager walks in the room being like, “What do you think about this song?" We've always wanted to stay away from the trucks thing but it starts “New truck, big lift, old roads” and she thought the same thing. Then another person walked in the room, so the second time I heard it, I liked it and when we showed it to the next person that walked in, my manager was like, "I actually kind of like it” but that person was like "No” so it was just like a cycle and we ended up listening to the song ten times but by the second time you heard it, everybody was like, yeah, I love it so it was fun.”

When you got on ‘Miles On It’, was that like a very different way to coming into a song compared to how you typically do things, where you're a lot more involved from the start?
“Yeah, because it's like kind of everything, you either fall in love with a song or with a cut, if you get something sent to you where normally, it's like, no, immediately but with this song, it was just, I needed to listen to it twice, you know what I'm saying?”

That’s gone on to have such huge success and then pretty much straight after ‘Backseat Driver’ went number one as well, which is a very different type of song and a much more typical country song, so that must be really fresh to know that two very different songs of yours can both have such huge appeal.
“Yeah and at the end of the day, that's just what I'm about. I'm just about music. I feel like music touches me in a very different way and I feel like music's just very universal, you know? You can't really judge people off of what they listen to because, you know, my favourite group I listen to right now is Slipknot and you wouldn't think that by looking at me. I don't know, I feel like music's very fascinating and I love the fact that I can do anything I want and there's people out there that will listen to it and like it, like all my die-hard fans.”
I mentioned ‘Backseat Driver’ and that was one of the songs on the record that came out this year which you didn't write. When you write the majority of your songs, to take something that's an outside cut, you must have to really connect with it, so how did you get that song in the first place and what made you really, really want to go out and record it?
“Well, I think the universe works in different ways and that song was going around Nashville for five years. I was writing with Jordan Walker, we wrote ‘Fiddle in the Band’ for my album and he said, "Hey, man, I want to show you this one song before I leave” and it was ‘Backseat Driver.’ Immediately, when I heard it, I felt like I was a writer on the song, it was everything that I would have said. It said a story that reminded me of that old school country type feel, I saw myself as a kid, I saw my daughters in the back seat and it was my story. Me hearing that and fans that followed me and my family, I just felt like they would see that and feel that song as well. I've had a lot of dads reach out to me saying that, you know, I brought them to tears with that song so just to see the father demographic of what that song did.”

You sort of said how songs have a habit of finding their way to people, like as well as working with Marshmello, you've got a couple of other collabs on the record and one of those is ‘Haunted’ which you had Jelly Roll on. When you're getting somebody in to collaborate, is it almost a case of when you're in the studio and you've cut a demo, that you can imagine someone’s voice on it so you just reach out to them?
“Yeah, I always say that I feel like I'm a pretty good A&R. So, you know, normally if I write something, I can normally hear the artist, the artist that I would want on there.”
Looking ahead to this run shows, touring here is a bit more compact with the dates compared to touring in the States as you’re doing a lot of shows in a short amount of time. You said you've managed to get a little bit of time today to look around Cologne so hopefully you'll get some time in London, Dublin and all the other places to, is any stuff you haven't seen over here yet that you're hoping to see?
“No, I think it just pops up, I mean when I was walking on the bridge and saw all the locks, I was like, yo, I’ve see this on TikTok so I was like, I'm putting a lock on there, by the way. Like I said, I'm not a big explorer but I think my manager has got stuff for us planned. She doesn't know that she's my tour guide for this two weeks or however long she's over here but yeah, it'll be fun.”

Well thanks for your time today, we’re really looking forward to have you rocking out Wembley Arena next week and just keep coming back, man, because people are really pumped for all these shows coming up on the tour.
“Thank you so much man, appreciate you talking to me.”
