Ward Thomas
Restless Minds
In 2016 Ward Thomas burst onto the music scene in the UK with the release of their number one album Cartwheels on the major label debut, having already built a country music fan base from their debut album in 2014, From Where We Stand. With the release they became the first UK country act to reach number one on the UK album chart and set themselves up as one of the countries first country stars. So, with the success of the Cartwheels record, countless live performances at concert halls and festival across the country as well as writing in Nashville - there’s not much pressure on this third album!!!!
The album opens with No Filter, asking the question of what would the world be like if everyone was open, honest and didn’t need to keep secrets - what if everyone said what they really wanted to say. “It’s all about being our true selves, and standing up for what we believe in. Instead of being shackled by the pressures to conform, the song is about having the courage to break free of them,” Catherine says.
Lie Like Me was released to fans in 2018 and has a beat you’ll instantly tap along to and is bound to be a crowd pleaser. For new listeners to the twins it will certainly draw them into the album. One More Goodbye slows the tempo down and has much more focus on the duos vocal ability. This tale sees the character refuse to leave home for a period away without one last kiss and drag out every goodbye as long as possible while the taxis waiting outside, even though you’ll be home in the blink of an eye.
It’s Not Just Me was the final track released to fans before the albums launch. The sisters New Years resolution was to focus on No Scroll Sunday and move away from social media every Sunday. This track reminds the listener that you’re not the only one facing difficulties feeling like the world is on your shoulders and there will be many people going through the same thing - even if you only think you see picture perfect life’s! This way of thinking continues in Ain’t That Easy, which looks at getting back up even when you want to give up, while Rather Be Breathing once again thinks about what’s really important in life.
In Hopeless we are fighting to save a relationship - should I walk away, because you’re breaking in anyway. Never Know is the what could have been song after cutting ties when you realise you were not someone’s first choice and a chorus to get the crowd singing. “It’s for anyone who has been rejected in a friendship, relationship or in work. But out of that rejection comes empowerment and a sense of freedom and release which gives you the courage to do what you believe in and be yourself.”
As the album continues, there is a clear message to the listener and Same Love continues that as Ward Thomas remind us everyone is looking for the same thing and are trapped in our minds. Changing could prove to be one of those songs, that despite being hidden in the album it could be remembered for its message which tells us not to stress and appreciate the world that is changing around us
No Fooling Me sees through someone and the slower tempo will bring a room to silence and have the crowd hanging on every word. The tempo spikes to 10 for the motivational feel good track, I Believe In You where anything is possible.
As the album closes out with Little Girl Sorrow, Deepest You and This Too Will Pass the duo can be proud of releasing an album that takes on life in 2019 head first. The twins encourage fans to focus on the important things in life - not the superficial. “We couldn’t help but address social media and the subconscious competition it creates,” says Lizzy. “There’s a fake reality that everyone our age is falling for right now. Scroll down, see my page, look at my perfect life!”
The album has the songs you’ll want to sing along to every word and the songs where you’ll just let the girls do their job while you listen.
In just a few weeks time the girls will be hitting the road to play the new music to fans across the country. One of the highlights will be there headline show at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire before supporting Jack Savoretti on his European tour.
