Zach bryan london review
Following on from a pair of back-to-back sold out shows in Hyde Park last summer, Zach Bryan returned to London for the first of two nights at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which much to the dismay of West Ham United fans, will once again host Premier League football next season.
As a Spurs fan, performances at our beautifully crafted and technologically advanced stadium, were few and far between during this calendar year but as Roberto De Zerbi is looking to bolster our ranks with much more grit and fighting spirit, the Italian could draw inspiration from this man from Oklahoma.
As the sun began to set and lit up the golden cockerel which sits on top of the south stand in Northumberland Park, Bryan commanded the stage in ways we have not seen at Spurs since the days of Ledley King, he brought flair that Gareth Bale and Luka Modric dared to do, he created excitement reminiscent of what Harry Kane brought to N17 and above all demonstrated the passion of Son Heung-min as beautifully as demonstrated in the recently painted artwork since his departure from the club.
When you review artists, you use a magnitude of words to express their live performance because you have to. However, Bryan is more than very, very good and as my first ballot nomination for Entertainer of the Year at last year’s CMA Awards reflects, I think he is a cut above the rest in country music. To me he belongs in the Coldplay or even Bruce Springsteen level of conversation of the best live performer in music and it is impossible to leave a venue after seeing him, where it has genuinely changed your life.
A Zach Bryan show just grabs you, it draws you in and it transports you to a better place where you can escape from the world in the way that no other artist can take you. He has one of the most incredible supporting casts who join him on stage and they give it everything from start to finish for one hundred and twenty minutes.
As is becoming tradition to open Zach Bryan shows, it starts off with them going real fast as he enters through the opening bars of “Overtime” and greets the crowd in London as he begun the twenty-three song main portion of the set which covered crowd singalongs spanning seven studio albums. The raging crowd favourite “Open the Gate” would follow before he presented the first of five offerings from his most recent record “With heaven on Top” and whilst “Appetite” being the first and probably best known judging by the crowd, the treat from this record was the performance of “Sundown Girls” right in the middle of the set, which marked the first time that Bryan had performed the song live.
The iconic “Something in the Orange” is always a special song to hear live as is the stunning and beautiful “Pink Skies” which fitting came during the sun setting over north London and prior to this, fans were also gifted a more stripped back and unreleased song, where it became instantly clear that “You’ll Get By” will be destined for much bigger things in the future. Whilst the energy and intensity of “Oklahoma Smokeshow” or “American Nights” and “East Side of Sorrow” are really able to get the crowd into a frenzy, the final song before the eagerly anticipated encore was his Kacey Musgraves collaboration “I Remember Everything” which the entire audience appeared to know word for word.
Bryan and his band would return for the most talked about encore in any genre of music and while it is only one song, “Revival” complete with the band introductions and fireworks at the end really is the most freeing and uplifting twelve to fifteen minutes of your life which is the reason so many people attend the show for that alone. It is truly a moment that really as close to a spiritual awakening that you will be a part of as it is so uplifting, so freeing, so magical and a something you will never forget.
The scale of the venues he has been able to pack out in the UK alone over the last two years shows that he has a truly dedicated fanbase who do recognise him as someone that is saving country music and long may his returns to this side of the pond continue where next time I’m sure he will be setting his sights on another stadium across London that is currently occupied by Harry Styles and Shania Twain because I think a Zach Bryan show at Wembley would easily be the most talked about gigs of all time. That is a manifestation of the future and hopefully James Maddison took plenty of notes to pass on to the rest of the Spurs boys for when they get back from the world cup and the boys can match this performance on the pitch next season but the show was so good, that we’re on our way to do it all again and be revived once more tonight!
